Your favorite sports might be canceled, but the mission of God’s church goes on. That’s true here at Grace as we continue to think of ways to practice discipleship through relationship and it’s true for the various ministries we partner with here in our community and throughout the world.
One of those organizations is Abundant Life, which exists to demonstrate God’s love through holistic community development in the Prospect neighborhood of downtown Charlottesville. If that sounds exciting to you (and I hope it does!), take a peek at this quick video.
One of the ways that Abundant Life shares the love of Jesus is through a series of tutoring, mentoring, and after-school programs. These programs give a chance for children and teenagers in the neighborhood to build relationships with Christians who love them and want to see them thrive. And, as we know, it’s in relationships like those that discipleship happens.
This school year is different in a lot of ways, but academic needs don’t just disappear when classes move online. Students still need help. In fact, depending on what their home situation is like, some students need will more help while classes are virtual. Abundant Life is looking to offer that help, but needs forty more volunteers for this school year in order to do it well. This is where the church of Jesus Christ steps in. We give ourselves in service to others because Jesus gave himself in service to us. That’s why we don’t exist for ourselves.
Many of our regular Fall commitments are canceled this year. I know that’s a bummer, but it’s also an opportunity! The demands on our time is different. Don’t waste it; use it! Use this extra time for the service of others. Invest yourself in other people. If you’re looking for a way to do that, Abundant Life is one place to look. You can sign up here if you’re interested in serving this school year.
Brothers and sisters, don’t let this season go to waste. Whether it’s Abundant Life or another opportunity, seek out places to serve others. Jesus will use you to make an impact – and he just might make an impact on you too!
