Sing, Church, Sing - Karen's Favorite

“Worship is the submission of all our nature to God. It is the quickening of conscience by His holiness, the nourishment of mind by His truth, the purifying of imagination by His beauty, the opening of the heart to His love, and the submission of the will to His purpose.” (William Temple)

When asked to write about a favorite worship song, it is hard for me to pick just one song. There are many songs that stir my emotions and make me feel close to God, but that is not the actual point of worship. It is truth about God, the love of God, and the pursuit of God for his wandering people that drives us to worship. The songs we sing should have deep truths of who God is and what He has done for us.

I have many favorite worship songs.

Come Thou Fount – “Prone to wander, Lord I feel it. Prone to leave the God I love. Here’s my heart, Lord, take and seal it for thy courts above.”

Before the Throne – “when Satan tempts me to despair and tells me of the guilt within, upward I look and see Him there, who made an end to all my sin.”

How Deep the Father’s Love – “I will not boast in anything, no gifts, no power, no wisdom.  but I will boast in Jesus Christ, his death and resurrection.”

But one of my VERY favorites was written by my dear friend, Ruth Trice (our drummer extraordinaire). I love when songs are completely Scripture. I always tell the team that when we read Scripture between songs, it is the truest and most perfect part of our worship. She put Psalm 34 to music. The Humble Shall Hear – “I will bless the Lord at all times. His praise will be ever in my mouth.” When we sing these truths, especially together, it is so very powerful. We may not be feeling it at the moment, but we are telling our souls the truth and reminding each other who we are and whose we are.

I’d love to know your favorite worship song (or if you’re like me, songs) and why it is your favorite. Please send me an email. I’d be delighted to hear from you.
