Word of the Week

Word of the Week: Molecules

Towards the end of the sermon on Sunday, I mentioned that we were made to be molecules and not individual atoms. For those of us who haven’t been in a science class for quite some time, a molecule is a series of atoms that are bonded together to create something new. Together the atoms become more than the sum of their parts. They actually create something new!

Human beings were made this way. We were made to be bound together in relationships of love. We were made for friendships and families. However, we live in a time where people are isolated and continue to grow more and more isolated. You feel it, don’t you? Our communication is increasingly digital, so we miss the depth of in-person interactions. Our lives are often over-scheduled, so we don’t have time to slow down and build meaningful relationships with each other. We were made to be molecules…but many of us are lonely atoms, floating adrift. And we feel it.

It’s not my goal to paint a despairing picture here! I’m only trying to name something that so many of us already know to be true. We’re highly individualistic – and it isn’t serving us well. But, by the grace of God, it doesn’t have to be this way. God has given us the church to be a family, to have those kinds of relationships that bind us together.

So why not take a step this week? You’ve been meaning to have those people over, so why not invite them over this weekend? You keep saying you’re going to get coffee soon, so why not send them a text message today and set something up? There are always a thousand reasons to keep chugging along as usual but, if we want life-long relationships, we have to start somewhere. Why not reach out and start with a small step today?
