Word of the Week: Nets
We’ve been singing a new song these past few weeks. Have you noticed? It’s called “Yet Not I But Through Christ in Me” by CityAlight. We sing again and again the central claim of Galatians 2:20, which reads:
I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
It’s a fitting song in light of last Sunday’s sermon. We took a closer look at John 21:1-14 and saw Jesus fill his disciples’ empty nets. The curse of sin has subjected our work to futility, but Jesus has overcome the power of sin. He’s restoring us – including all the things we do – to the fruitfulness for which he has made us.
The gospel changes the way we think about work. No longer are we powerless. No longer are we ill-equipped. We go in the power of the Holy Spirit. We work to bring life to a lifeless world, not in our own strength, but through Christ who is in us. We do it by faith in the Son of God, who loved us and gave himself for us. Jesus fills the nets; we just drag them to shore.
How do you feel about your work this week? Do you see it as obstacle or some duty you have to perform to get to what really matters? Or do you see an opportunity for worship? Christian, Jesus isn’t just with you in church on Sunday morning. He’s with you. Period. As you and I take up our nets again this week, my prayer as that we’ll recognize his presence and see our work as fellowship with Jesus. We work shoulder to shoulder with him in the power he supplies.
