Word of the Week

Word of the Week: Perspective

I’m in Dallas, TX this week for our denomination’s annual General Assembly. This is when elders from across the country gather together and do the business of the church. But this post isn’t about General Assembly. This post is about my flight in.

The plane was landing in Dallas right around lunch time. As we flew into the airport, we flew over numerous neighborhoods and subdivisions. I could see major highways and big hotels. I know it’s a cliché, but the city was spread out before me like…well, ants. I’m in the eighth floor of the hotel. It’s an impressive looking building from the ground. But from the air? It looks tiny. It’s amazing the difference perspective can make.

It this got me thinking – Isn’t that true of life in general? How many things seem big and ominous when they’re in front of us, only to feel trivial once they’re behind us? How many of us get stressed about things that don’t end up mattering in the end? I could benefit from a bigger perspective. Could you?

In Colossians 3:1-4, Paul writes with this kind of perspective.

If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life appears, then you will appear with him in glory.

According to Paul, being a disciple is a matter of perspective. Are you setting your mind on the things that are above or the things that are on earth? It’s an important question! The things of earth can seem huge. But when our minds are fixed on Christ, who is seated on the throne, it’s like we’re looking at these problems from the window of an airplane. They don’t go away. We can still see them – but they look a lot smaller in comparison.

What’s looming big in your vision this week? Is it really that big, or do you need a new perspective? Have your kids worn you down to your last nerve? Keep perspective: Christ is on the throne. Are your co-workers driving you insane? Remember that your work is not your life. Your life is in Christ.  Brothers and sisters, let’s keep our minds set on what’s important.
