Word of the Week

Word of the Week: Second

Second. I probably said it three hundred times on Sunday, but only because I think it captures 1 Peter 3:1-7 better than any other single word. In these verses, the Apostle Peter gives instructions to husbands and wives to put each other before themselves.

This is the model that Jesus gave us, coming second for our salvation. Jesus put aside the honor he rightfully deserved by coming and living among us. He walked away from his comfort and convenience – because we needed him to. We needed him to come to our rescue since we would never be able to save ourselves. By coming to serve rather than be served, Jesus showed us what it means to live. And what’s true of our whole lives is most certainly true of marriage! Husbands and wives come second for each other because Jesus Christ came second for us.

I don’t quote or recommend books in sermons very often. That’s intentional, because I want it to stand out when I do. On Sunday, I referenced The Meaning of Marriage by Tim and Kathy Keller. It’s without a doubt the best book on marriage I’ve ever read. This book might give you some insight if you’re wondering what it looks like to practically come second and put your spouse before yourself. We have a copy in the church library if anyone is interested. First come, first served!
