A Little Lewis

Each October, as part of my birthday celebration, I read a book either by or about C.S. Lewis, one of my favorite authors. This year, it is Becoming C.S. Lewis by Harry Lee Poe, the first of a three volume biography. In light of this, I thought I would share some of my favorite Lewis quotes. Most are from his non-fiction writing, though one or two are from The Chronicles of Narnia (you’ve read those by now, haven’t you?). I could choose more from Narnia but that would take pages. So without further ado…

Humility is not thinking less of yourself, but thinking of yourself less. - Mere Christianity

If I find in myself a desire which no experience in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that I was made for another world. - Mere Christianity

Aim at heaven and you will get earth thrown in. Aim at earth and you get neither. - Mere Christianity

Once in our world, a stable had something in it that was bigger than our whole world. - The Last Battle

Everyone says forgiveness is a lovely idea, until they have something to forgive. - Mere Christianity

In our own case we accept excuses too easily; in other people’s, we do not accept them easily enough. - The Weight of Glory

God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks to us in our conscience, but shouts in our pain; it is his megaphone to rouse a deaf world. - The Problem of Pain

There are far, far better things ahead than any we leave behind. - Collected Letters of C.S. Lewis

No man knows how bad he is till he has tried very hard to be good. - Mere Christianity

All their life in this world and all their adventures in Narnia had been only the cover and the title page; now at last they were beginning Chapter One of the Great Story which no one on earth has read:  which goes on forever:  in which each chapter is better than the one before. - The Last Battle
