This past Sunday, we spent time looking at Jesus’ words about His relationship to the law in Matthew 5:17-20. I mentioned that many of us have a knee jerk adverse reaction when we think of God’s law. We equate it with legalism, a false view that has been spiritually harmful to many believers, and one we should reject. But legalism is not what Jesus or the rest of the Scriptures promote (they actively speak against it). So I simply want to share some verses from Psalm 119, that give us a proper understanding and appreciation of the law of God.
In the ways of your testimonies I delight as much as in all riches - v. 14
I will delight in your statutes; I will not forget a word - v. 16
Open my eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of your law - v. 18
Your testimonies are my delight; they are my counselors - v. 24
Lead me in the path of your commandments, for I delight in it - v. 35
For I find my delight in your commandments, which I love. I will lift up my hands toward your commandments, which I love, and I will meditate on your statutes - vv. 47-48
Your statutes have been my songs in the house of my sojourning - v. 54
Their heart is unfeeling like fat, but I delight in your law - v. 70
The law of your mouth is better to me than thousands of gold and silver pieces - v. 72
Let your mercy come to me, that I may live; for your law is my delight - v. 77
If your law had not been my delight, I would have perished in my affliction - v. 92
Oh how I love your law! It is my meditation all the day - v. 97
How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth! - v. 103
Your testimonies are my heritage forever, for they are the joy of my heart - v. 111
Therefore I love your commandments above gold, above fine gold - v. 127
Your testimonies are wonderful; therefore my soul keeps them - v. 129
My soul keeps your testimonies; I love them exceedingly - v. 167
I long for your salvation, O Lord, and your law is my delight - v. 174
Saints, I encourage you to spend some time meditating on these verses so that your hearts, minds, and souls will be reoriented to a proper love for and obedience to the law of God.
