Quotes for Christmas

100804

By the time of this post, we will have left Advent behind and will be in full celebration of the Christmas season. Below are some thoughts to ponder as you rejoice in the birth of our Savior.

In our world too, a Stable once had something in it that was bigger than our whole world. - C.S. Lewis

The glory of the incarnation is that it presents to our adoring gaze not a humanized God or deified man, but a true God-man - one who is all that God is and at the same time all that man is: on whose mighty arm we can rest, and to whose human empathy we can appeal. We cannot afford to lose either the God in the man or the man in God; our hearts cry out for the complete God-man, whom the Scriptures offer to us. - B.B. Warfield

All the works and ways of God have something in them mysterious, above the comprehension of any finite understanding. As this is the case with his works of creation and providence, there is no reason to expect it should be otherwise in the astonishing method of the redemption of the world by Jesus Christ. - John Witherspoon

In Christ two natures met to be your cure. - George Herbert

Jesus was God and man in one person, that God and man might be happy together again. - George Whitefield

In the mystery of His incarnation the only-begotten of the Father increased what was ours, but diminished not what was His. - Gregory the Great

Here is something marvelous:  the Son of God descended from heaven in such a way that, without leaving heaven, he willed to be borne in the virgin’s womb, to go about the earth, and to hang upon the cross; yet he continuously filled the world even as he had done from the beginning! - John Calvin

It is because of His humanity and His incarnation that Christ becomes sweet to us, and through Him God becomes sweet to us. Let us therefore begin to ascend step by step from Christ’s crying in His swaddling clothes up to His Passion. Then we shall easily know God. I am saying this so that you do not begin to contemplate God from the top, but start with the weak elements. We should busy ourselves completely with treating, knowing, and considering this man. Then you will know that He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. - Martin Luther

Merry Christmas!
