Life is hard. There is no getting around that fact. Followers of Jesus are not immune from it. That can lead to our sense of assurance (not the reality of it) of salvation wavering. Even the Westminster Confession of Faith (part of the PCA’s doctrinal standards) acknowledges this in chapter 18, section 4 when it states True believers may have the assurance of their salvation divers ways shaken, diminished, and intermitted. So, over the next few weeks, I will be sharing some items that I hope will remind you of the reality of your security in Christ and also encourage you if you are going through one of those wavering times right now.
For this post, I am sharing the lyrics to A Debtor to Mercy Alone, the hymn I quoted from at the end of last week’s sermon.
A debtor to mercy alone,
Of covenant mercy I sing.
Nor fear, with thy righteousness on,
My person and offering to bring.
The terrors of law and of God
With me can have nothing to do;
My Savior’s obedience and blood
Hide all my transgressions from view.
The work which His goodness began,
The arm of His strength will complete;
His promise is yea and amen,
And never was forfeited yet.
Things future, nor things that are now,
Not all things below or above
Can make Him His purpose forego,
Or sever my soul from His love.
My name from the palms of His hands
Eternity will not erase;
Impressed on His heart it remains
In marks of indelible grace.
Yes, I to the end shall endure,
As sure as the earnest is given
More happy, but not more secure,
The glorified spirits in heaven.
